Where Did The Celebration of the 100th Day of School Originate?
According to the Houston Chronicle, the “100 days of school” concept started back in 1979 by a teacher named Lynn Taylor in Livermore, California. The Chronicle describes it as a math exercise that involved a Sesame Street puppet counting 100 pennies to make $1. Two years later it was written about in a global math newsletter and appears to have spread from there. Now it’s a celebration of how far students have come in the school year with a look at finishing the year strong!

Kindness and Leadership Ideas To Celebrate the 100th Day of School

There are so many unique ways to celebrate the 100th Day of School, but what about using this as an opportunity to promote doing good! In addition to our free 100th Day of School printables, we also have a few ways to mark 100 Days of School through kindness and leadership activities! The 100 Days of School kindness activities include:
- 100 Good Deeds For 100 Days of School: Can your class make a list of 100 good deeds that are doable to spread kindness in the school and community for the last stretch of the school year? Put these on a big posterboard and cross them off as you go! If possible, have a celebration once they are completed!
- 100 Pieces of Trash School Clean-Up: Get your gloves, bags and trash pick up grabber tools and as a class pick up 100 pieces of trash off the playground and around the school.
- 100 Day Of School Leadership Activity: Let’s have your class act as school leaders for this one and run a food drive for a local food pantry with a goal of 100 donations! First, contact the local food pantry and see what they are in need of and how you’ll get the donations to them. From there, make a flyer and reach out to every grade with specifics on what they can bring (for example, kindergarten can bring in boxes of pasta, 1st grade is canned veggies… etc.) Keep track as donations come in as to what you count is! Get to 100 donations and celebrate with a PJ and movie day! Don’t forget to recruit some volunteers willing to deliver these donations or arrange for a pick-up! Use this as a 100th Day of School leadership and counting activity. However, if you get to more than 100 donations that’s great too!
- 100 Caring Cards: As a class, put together 100 notes for people may benefit from a cheerful note or drawing. Some ideas include people in the hospital or a local nursing home. There are many organizations who will match you a place to send your cards and other logistics. You may want to think local so these can be dropped off as opposed to individually mailing, but if you have the postage, go for it!
When is the 100th Day of School?
Depending on what day you started, schools count school days only (not weekends or holidays off) up to 100 days. In most places the 100th day of school falls in February or early March. Your school will usually give you a head’s up that it’s coming up!
